  1. Resolved Question: Job interview question: What if things didn't work out at ...
  2. 22 May 2008 at 3:33pm
I have had a few job interviews this past week and one of the questions is asked ?Why did you leave your previous employment.? The truth is that my boss and I didn?t get along, he was very verbally abusive and I could not take it, especially for what I was being paid. I stayed with the job for a long time ?cause well?I needed to pay rent. I finally left one a straw broke the camels back in which a girl just got hired and was paid $1.50 more than I even though she had just started, I was there for 3 years and had more experience. I was declined the raise on top of other BS and left. How do I answer that question. You don?t want to answer ?conflicts of interests encouraged me to seek employment? ?cause that is not sending a good message to potential employers who may want to hire you. At the same time you want to be honest. On the same note, these employers are more likely going to call your previous employer as a reference.

  14. 22 May 2008 at 2:45pm
My husband posted a resume on Monster and the very next day the VP came out to meet with him. He said that HR had called to his attention this resume posting and he asked my husband to not quit and please stay. Since then the VP has shown up to meet with a couple other employees and my husband wonders if they also posted their resume on Monster. Employment is at-will, does a company have a right to monitor whether their employees post their resumes online? It spooked my husband that they would do such a thing. My husband posted the resume at home so it wasn't done on company time or with a company computer.

  16. 22 May 2008 at 2:24pm
I recently graduated college. Now I have to find a job. My problem is that there are very few professional jobs in or around my small town. The nearest larger city is about an hour away, and I don't want to spend half my paycheck on gas to get to work. So to those of you who are professionals but live in small towns -- do you work in town, and in what type of place? How did you find a professional place to work? What kind of opportunities might be available to me? I have a bachelor's in communication now, but I feel like my only options for full-time employment around here are factories.

  23. Voting Question: What to do about my current job position?
  24. 22 May 2008 at 1:44pm
I current work as a receptionist at a medical office and I absolutely hate it. Prior to working here, I worked on my own as a office manager but left for an employment opportunity that I thought was better then it actually turned out to be. I ended up here as a last resort because there weren't many opportunities at the time for employment and took the position because I wanted to have a steady income for the time being. I do not get paid what I feel I deserve and I hate everything about it. I hate how little I get paid for how much I do and I hate being the grunt worker. I am looking elsewhere for employment but again there aren't too many positions in the location that I live in that I am qualified for. I just would like some ideas how to get my resume out there (I am going through many online sites at the moment) and how to deal with the stress and bs that I deal with on a daily basis. I know that most do not like their careers but this job is taking its toll on me outside of the me at home as well. I hate being constantly watched like a hawk and treated like I am some ditz when I am fully competent enough to do this work especially when I came from an environment where I ran everything. I am completely depressed and just don't know what to do until I find a job and can leave. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks you :)

I put in driveways giving a 1 year guarantee. Problems have arisen on 1 of the drives but i am no longer trading and do no longer posses the tools to fix the problem. The reason i ask is that not long after bing self employed i girlfriend had a child. The irregular hours and pay ment i couldn't properly support my little family so i went back to full time employment. I used to lay drives with a 1 year guarantee, a old customer has reported somehting wrong but a) i now ave no time to help them and b) i now do not have the equipment. As bad as i feel i just cannot afford to help them. Hence can they do anything about it? So i do not consider myself a cowboy as all work was carried out in good faith.

"In 1842 a law banned children under 10 and all females from working underground... Then in 1847 a Factory Act said that women and children could only work 10 hours a day in textile factories. In 1867 the law was extended to all factories..." I often hear that women do not want to work the dangerous, dirty, industrial jobs, so why was it necessary to bar them from industrial employment, or to limit their hours at work? And what consequences do you think this might have had? :-) http://www.localhistories.org/19thcent.html

  34. 22 May 2008 at 11:17am
"President Bush signs genetic anti-discrimination bill. In continuing coverage from previous editions of Morning Rounds, the AP (5/22, Feller) reports that on Wednesday, President Bush "signed legislation to protect people from losing their jobs or health insurance when genetic testing reveals they are susceptible to costly diseases." The genetic anti-discrimination law "forbids employers and insurance companies from denying employment, promotions, or health coverage to people when genetic tests show they have a predisposition to cancer, heart disease, or other ailments." The bill's sponsors called "it a groundbreaking protection of civil rights." Meanwhile, the scientific community has "supported the bill because Americans have been refusing to take genetic tests or have been using false names and paying cash because they didn't want the information used against them by their employer or insurance company." The Boston Globe (5/21, Rhee) also covered the story.." The quote above was from the AMA Morning Rounds. Will it affect you personally? I've known people who worried about medical conditions they might be susceptible to but they did not get tested because they didn't want to be unable to get insured later. My mother has Alzheimer's. If a genetic test is available, I'd get it in a heart-beat NOW, because it would make planning so much more concrete. Will the new law affect you or those you know?

  35. Resolved Question: Can non-competes be amended?
  36. 22 May 2008 at 11:15am
I am a person looking to secure a position as a physician recruiter. I began working in the industry 2 1/2 years ago. As a condition of employment, I had to sign a non compete. I ended up leaving that position to move to a different city and wanted to continue working in the industry. I was able to get a company to come to an agreement with my previous employer to allow me to work for them. Unfortunately, the new employer had many financial troubles I was unaware of and I left that position after 9 months. I have been offered a position with a company within the industry, but am still subject to the non-compete I signed with my first industry employer. The terms of that non-compete are that I will not work for any competitor for 2 years after resignation (April 1, 2007) and not within 300 miles of that company (I am currently 100 miles away.) Is this reasonable and do I have a chance of challenging this successfully? I just want to work.

I could quit whenever I wanted to....Well my boss knows I'm in school and will not be here very long so he asked me the other day..whenever I think of leaving just give him heads up so he can be hiring for my position. But my thing is, if the employment is AT WILL that means the company can FIRE anyone if they wanted to without notice...so why should I have to give a notice??? I would love to know 2 weeks + if I was getting fired...but they don't do that!!!

  53. Resolved Question: Work & My notice period. Please read.?
  54. 22 May 2008 at 8:15am
I handed in my letter of resignation yesterday at work and have to work a weeks notice so i will finish next wednesday (28-05-08). My boss, asked me to stay on and asked me whether i would just do one night shift a week from now on and i said i would think about it, however i do now know after thinking it over, i don't want to do this. When I told my boss i would think it over, she said 'ok well, i'll hang onto your letter and wont take it downstairs yet'. This may sound stupid, but my question is, will my employment still end next wednesday as i stated in my letter or because she didnt file it yesterday, will I have to work a weeks notice from when she files it??? Any questions on this just ask and i'll update because it seems a bit long winded.

  55. Voting Question: Leaving a job - How much notice do I need to give?
  56. 22 May 2008 at 8:07am
I work at reception in a hotel. I've been working here for the past 9 months as full time employment. Most people - when i ask this question - tell me to check the contract i signed but i've never actually signed a contract and i don't feel i can ask my boss because if i don't get a job asap i think they'll cut my hours. They're like that here, that's the reason i'm looking for another place of work. And one other thing, when i'm handing in my notice, what do i say in the letter i give the GM?! Thanks =] I get paid weekly...

  67. Voting Question: Do I need to submit cover letter online on company site?
  68. 22 May 2008 at 4:09am
The site gives explicit instructions with submitting ASCII text resume (and even gives example) and doesn't mention cover letter. It also says don't add attachments. Also, the site is highly impersonal and uses a resume tracking service. It is for an IBM internship and here are the instructions they give: http://www-03.ibm.com/employment/us/un_resume.shtml

  72. 22 May 2008 at 3:02am
"Today's European Union-funded report... says that the average man in full-time employment works about 55 hours a week. In the UK that figure includes about 3.6 hours commuting, and eight hours of domestic work such as cleaning, cooking and child care. By contrast, the average working week for a woman in full-time employment in the EU is 68 hours. For British women that comprises 40 hours in the office, 3.3 hours commuting and 23 hours a week spent doing domestic work. Women with part-time jobs work on average 57 hours a week. That is made up of 21.3 hours in paid work, 2.4 hours commuting and 32.7 hours of domestic work..." I can understand the part-time women doing more unpaid work, but how do we explain the difference in full time working women? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1571719/Career-women-work-longer-hours-than-me n.html Bill - it is about unpaid domestic work, rather than unpaid hours at work :-) Ken - the only info I can find on the 2002 University of Michigan Institute for Social Research Survey is this one, which quotes... "The study was based on results from Canada, Russia, Finland and Hungary as well as Japan, Sweden and the US." These are quite diverse countries, meaning that the results as a whole are not comparable / generalisable to Europe. If you have a link to the original research, or a breakdown of the research country by country, please do post it :-) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/1871274.stm

Basic story: the co. work for is laying off in all departments. i have had several issues with harassment with my co-workers and have made complaints on several levels of the company but they just chose to ignore me. (i kept all the emails) but they are requesing that i dont speak of what went on during my employment with the company in order to receive severance pay which i really need right now. before i got this letter i was just gonna deal with the people and just move on and not look back, but receiving this letter changes my whole attitude about what i was about to do. i realize the company is just covering their butt, but i just need some perspective on if i should just continue with my original plan or try and fight them since they are definately in the wrong. i have a family and this will definately add more stress. i was planning to move from this area using my bonus monies. im just not sure what to do now. i dont have money for a lawyer.

  91. Resolved Question: Zero Tolerance EEO Policies?
  92. 22 May 2008 at 12:15am
If you were a manager or in a supervisory position, and you overheard an employee make a racial slur or a derogatory comment based on gender or religion. The employee realizes his/her mistake just as he or she makes it, but it's too late to take it back other people heard it. The company has a zero tolerance policy that all offenses must be reported. How would you handle it? Would you make it known on the spot that the comment was inappropriate and pull the employee into the office for a talk about how this effects their employment and make it known that any future comment no matter the severity will result in a report? Would you simply file a report to the EEO and let them handle it? Or would you do something else entirely? Note: this employee has no history of making such comments. What if it were two employees of the same gender, race, or religion making comments amongst themselves?

  93. Resolved Question: Why do women believe its their "right" for a man to spend ...

Women, married, single, dating or whatever, often seem to assume that its a mans responsibility to pay "their" way! Even if not married guess who foots the bill? Why are women so predatory? Why have they no self-respect? Since prostitution is the oldest form of employment, are women when selling themselves within a relationship guilty of the same crime? Do women who sleep with men, for money, prestige, power, security, dinners, dates, and expect the man to pay, behaving like prostitutes?

  99. Resolved Question: Police Pre-Employment Questionnaire.?
  100. 21 May 2008 at 11:27pm
OK I'm looking through the pre-employment questionnaire for the Sheriff's Department I want to work for and I'm finding some of the questions to be a little worrying. "Have you remained in a place where drugs, narcotics or other illegal substances were being used, possessed, sold, manufactured, etc?" I have because my mother smokes marijuana, but only for medicinal purposes since she has a number of painful ailments. I still live with my mother because I'm going to school. "Do you or any of your friends, immediate family, or associates use any drugs, narcotics, or other illegal substances." Again, my mom smokes marijuana, as do some of my friends, but nothing else. I used to smoke a little marijuana but I quit when I was 15 (8 years ago) and only did it one time afterwards the summer of 2006 (only one puff). The questionnaire says that the answers to these questions will be confirmed by a polygraph test. Can this ruin my chances of being hired? I'm fairly sure that I can convince my friends to quit smoking, but I don't think my mom can since she uses it to ease her pain. All of these questions are only Yes/No answers. No chance to explain anything. It is NOT legal for my mother, just because she uses it for medicinal reasons doesn't mean it's legal. My state is not one that allows medicinal use of marijuana. Michael B did you even read my question? I already know the answers to these questions, what I'm worried about is are those answers gonna disqualify me?< >
