Resolved Question: Learning Multiple languages Simutanously?
7 Jun 2008 at 1:40pm
Hi there. I currently use Rosetta Stone for the immersion learning and Pimsleur for more casual conversation (complete interactive sentences). My question is, in your own opinions is how effective or perhaps, ineffective is it that I study several languages at the same time? I am currently only studying German because I hope to be fluent in it but given I have access to every single language Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur has it would be nice to explore and learn others.
Voting Question: want to create a site in asp.net with multiple logins.?
7 Jun 2008 at 12:42am
i've to create a website on local intranet for my institution. i m using visual studio 2005 (language-c#). in my site there will be three types of users section. Administrator, User, Employee. All 3 will have different areas (as u have understood by its name). i just want to know how to create multiple logins as well as how to connect it to database (using SQL Server 2005). Serious answers please.
Resolved Question: ruby or python?
4 Jun 2008 at 12:30am
I've looked around a bit and started looking at both as a next language. Mainly for fun, but also as another tool in the box. Looking at the two, they both seem very similar, easily read, and easily expandable with different libraries. Ruby has Rails, and Python has django. They both seem similar, but Django seems a little more specifically driven at one type of user. Python seems like it has one right tool for each job, but ruby's model seems more open to multiple solutions My question is, before I go on too long, which would you choose and why? and please correct any misconceptions i may have yeah, I'm not using the frameworks as a deciding factor, but generally they can tell you what the people using the language are doing, and where it may be going. Rav, both Ruby and Python are pretty equal in web/non-web programing capabilities. Rails is the hot item in Ruby right now, so you're gonna see a lot more of that side. Any other advice would be appreciated.
Resolved Question: Popular Music Around the World?
3 Jun 2008 at 2:57pm
I'm trying to gather a bunch of different "Top 40" type music from around the world (a lot of various countries). I would prefer large-quantity consumer-markets (such as Japan, India, Puerto Rico, France, Britain, ect.) in their NATIVE languages. Please post a link if you have one!! Or multiple links if you have them! But please no links that only lead to US Top 40 songs being played in another country. I really want to broaden my music collection, but I can only find old songs that were once top 40 material... also, if any one can find american songs that have been translated into another language, this would also be helpful!!
Resolved Question: A Separate Yahoo Answers Group for Persons about 25 up? He...
3 Jun 2008 at 1:52pm
asked the question. Surprisingly most people supported the idea, which is unusual in a forum with so much negativity. Each paragraph begins a separate answer from a separate person: Are you kidding, these kids not only lie about their age they have two, three or four different names they go by and if they feel like getting you deleted and don't have anything else to do, they sign in under those names and delete your answers. Or your questions. Stand by for lots of this for the next 3 months, some schools let out for summer in May and others let out in June I am very careful that my answers are never offensive, but if the kids don't like my ideas, they just claim that it is not a question or an answer and Yahoo seems to delete it automatically if they get a couple of complaints, and those may be from one kid using two different names. Some wouldnt go into the over 25 group, cause they would think it was boring.Very good idea! So true, but I don't think yahoo is interested in fixing the problem, we have been asking this for some time now.Or they listen to the wrong people, and try to fix in ways that don't really work Most kids would not be attracted to a site that says it is for 25 up. We can get along with a few all right. It is having so many hostile kids, as we do now, that make the forum intolerable. And Yahoo catering to them, when they eliminate intelligent sound statements just because immature kids are feeling their oats. One of the biggest reasons for asking for a 25 up group, is that most of us have been deleted and accused of violations, just because we have expressed intelligent opinions and been censored by immature kids who object to anything that does not match their prejudices. The past is a travesty I sometimes suspect Yahoo staff is in the under 25 group since they delete intelligent questions right and left. Or maybe they just feel they have to cater to the majority. I agree with you that they should have different age brackets in here. It is interesting to see what the younglings are thinking but, sometimes I wonder. I've been absent from this place for about six months because of the exact things you point out. I agree with you. Yahoo Answers is subject to the whims of naughty children who sign up with multiple accounts so they can "game" the community here and delete anything that doesn't please them. I suppose it's normal for children to exhibit childish behavior but it is astounding that Yahoo would allow itself to be tugged around like this There were a number of good answers and I am happy to see that I am not the only one that gets frustrated on this site. The trouble is, I am never sure whether I am fighting the kids or Yahoo, nor do I know for sure that the Yahoo censors are adults. If the Yahoo censors are just kids themselves, well.............. Agreed. You know, I think I agree with you on that. If kids want to impersonate adults and can do it by acting maturely, I don't have a problem with that either. I agree with you, and I'm fourteen. I'm very tired of seeing my peers posting stupid questions, giving stupid answers, not knowing what they're typing, spamming, reporting everyone whose avatar they don't like, or someone whose answer they didn't like. And that is true, we are a very angry group of people who can't stand opinions. But like you said, let those who can handle it stay. I'd rather not be trapped with a bunch of illiterates who can't use a keyboard or show any sign of respect towards the English language. I agree. One of Yahoo! Answers biggest aims seems to be to protect the kiddies from ideas. i could care less about age or maturity, just get rid of the dang report monkeys! There are a million stories like yours. The more sincere and honest you try to be, the more likely you will get deleted or suspended. This may be because kids do not have enough experience to know the truth when they hear it, or are so hostile at that age that they complain about everything.
Resolved Question: Is a Senior Yahoo Official there? I asked if people wanted...

ideas are usually deleted if the kids don't agree 100% with them. The remarks don't have to be offensive, because the kids can just claim it is not a question or answer. Anyway, I would like a senior official of Yahoo to read some of the answers that follow, because to my surprise almost all were in favor of my suggestion. Unusual where negativity is so common. Each paragraph that follows represents a separate answer from a separate person.++++++ Are you kidding, these kids not only lie about their age they have two, three or four different names they go by and if they feel like getting you deleted and don't have anything else to do, they sign in under those names and delete your answers. Some kids would still go in, thinking that where the good stuff is. I've seen answers in serious health care questions that I thought might be kids. So the kids do move around in different categories. Then again, some wouldnt go in cause they would think it was boring.Very good idea! Resolved Question: Will this win the Nobel Peace Prize?
31 May 2008 at 2:42am
Jason Remigio III Colorado Technical University Online SCI205-0802B-11: Environmental Science Julie R. Hens May 28, 2008 Phase 1 Individual Project Task 2 Global Warming Effect The population of this Easter Island peaked around more than 10,000 which had exceeded the capabilities of the small island?s ecosystem, Admiral Roggeveen came upon the island in 1722, when first discovered by a known civilization he name it Easter Island that we as came to known today. Easter Island was an thriving and advanced social order of what has started to decline into a bloody civil war, which was cannibalism was once a remnant of an lost continent or an extra-terrestrial influence and the archaeological evidence turned it in that it started around 400 A.D. and the island was long discovered by the Polynesians. Their written language was written in Oceania and the resources became scarce and once flourishing palm forests were destroyed. The island population was a disaster to slavery and disease. Easter Island was an epiphany of an ecological disaster (Brookman, 2007). Forests have provided a habitat for plant and animal species, as we move into the 21st century, as we Americans are addicted to oil it has destroyed the rainforests in its continuing funding of dirty coal by major banks which can and must end. A major ?big word? that has contributed in destroying the rainforests was the rapid proliferation of soy and palm oil plantations owned by U.S. agribusiness. The tropical rainforests are starting to disappear at an alarming rate of 100,000 acres per day which poses a major threat to the tropical Amazon rainforest the world?s largest intact rainforest. The rainforest is the best weapon in curbing climate change so it doesn?t further the weather effects of global warming, greenhouses gases going into the atmosphere has become intensive. Brazil is the world?s fourth largest emitter and also has accounted for three-quarters of greenhouses gases emissions that have come from Brazil which has affected the world in deforestation. The releasing process of not only carbon dioxide, but also methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas, however, the industrial agricultural plantations converts vital carbon sink into a dangerous greenhouse gas emitter. Rainforests does it can to curb off climate change by storing carbon from where it originated this helps regulate global weather patterns that is why moisture coming from the rainforests produces rain that travels far away from the tropic ecosystem (Rainforest Action Network, 1995-2008). Our planet Earth?s ocean only 95 percent underwater is still uncharted it is the undiscovered county while 71 of the Earth?s ocean covers the planet surface and 97 percent of the planet is mainly of water. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), now aims to make 21st century technology the Achilles heel in observing, and predicting as it protects the planet by providing scientists with scientific information to make a sound policy on their decision-making process. They test our oceans which supports 20 percent of the animal protein and 5 percent total of the human diet protein, while only nearly 50 percent of all life on Earth these species helps to sustain life with the necessary protein. Monitoring our oceans such as shipping of the ocean and lake-dependent industries we provide them with helpful information to make better informed decisions on the long-term success and consistent monitoring the oceans? understanding of its role and to improve its sanitation. There are many oceans and lakes in many integral parts of the Earth?s system which includes weather and climate changes (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2008). From the effects of human activities on the ecosystems that have made an impact on creating more pollutants in the marine environment, scientists now have network of buoys, tidal stations, and satellite to measure the stats on the ocean and Great Lakes of its state of status, they have used this type of information to raised serious questions of dynamics behind climate change using combined data of weather and climate data (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2008). Upon exploring the unknown ocean while using and developing advanced technology for discoveries of new undersea habitats, communities, species, phenomena and greater understanding of ecosystems. As for the weather the NOAA monitors the climate change to the weather due to global warming also, also monitors the sun to the seas, the National Weather Service provides local and regional forecasts, and emergency alerts for severe storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, extreme heat, fire threats, and tsunamis. Their job is to plan for response to climate variability and change focused on providing a predictive understanding of the global climate system. And the short-term climate fluctuations and provides information on the effects of climate patterns can have on the nation (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2008). Coasts have rich living and non-living marine resources which can sustain the prosperity and economic growth nationwide it has encompassed the oceans and coasts, bays, estuaries and the Great Lakes as these numbers will start to continue to grow. They protect the preserves, and manage and restores and enhances the nation?s coastal resources and ecosystems along the United States shoreline stretching to a distance of 95,439 miles (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2008). Up to date information, as a result of emissions from fossil-fuel burning, and a carbon cycle model computes the time evolution of atmospheric CO2 as the residual between emissions and uptake by land and ocean. As in concern for the global carbon cycle, nonetheless, it was intimately embedded in the physical climate system and tightly interconnected with human activities; it was the consequence of the climate, the carbon cycle, and humans are linked in a network of feedbacks, of which only those between the physical climate system and the carbon cycle. According to the Hadley Centre Model, the carbon-climate feedback reaches 980 parts per million, leading to an average near-surface warming of +5 Kelvin, while the IPSL model attains only 780 parts per million and a warming of + 3 Kelvin. This can be traced to the higher sensitivity of the land carbon cycle to warming in the Hadley Centre model, and to the larger ocean uptake in the IPSL model. The interactions of the physical climate system with the global carbon cycle, as for example, the emissions from land use changes are prescribed as an external input, and the associated changes in land cover are not explicitly modeled. They are at risk of losing large amounts of carbon to the atmosphere as a result of changing climate and the human drivers. The increasing fossil-fuel emissions and their redistribution of the three major reservoirs of the global carbon cycle from 1920 to 2100 as risen dramatically as read in the Earth?s system models. Carbon pools may be vulnerable during this century, the total amount of carbon stored in these pools is very large, 2 to 5 times large then the current atmosphere. The consequence would be a major increase in atmospheric CO2 and hence a severe reduction of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions permitted, if the atmosphere is not to exceed a certain target CO2 concentration. There is a belief of the majority of the feedbacks within the carbon-climate-human system are positive, it was also believed it also lead to an acceleration of the greenhouse gas-induced climate change. The present day global carbon cycle and its anthropogenic CO2 perturbation, scientists have the understanding of how the carbon cycle will evolve in the 21st century. It is projected a mean warning of 1.3 degrees Celsius for the mid-21st century in the range of years in the year 2021 thru 2050 which is relative to the 1961 to 1990 average, with a range from + 0.8 degrees Celsius to + 1.7 degrees Celsius. The effect of sulphate aerosols whiles the effect from greenhouses gases alone would be about 0.3 degrees Celsius higher. The mean global surface temperature is projected to increase by 3.0 degrees Celsius with a range from 1.3 degrees Celsius to 4.5 degrees Celsius. During the general pattern of warming is somewhat uniform across a large range of models and generally consists of maximum warming at high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Ocean as the minimum. A slowing of deforestation has the same effect as a decrease in fossil emissions or an increase in land or ocean sink (Field, Raupach, 2004). The net contribution to atmospheric CO2 can be positive or negative and a cooling effect that may be larger than the warming related to the CO2 release. The postglacial warming of about 5 degrees Kelvin occurred over 10,000 years, on the other hand, global warming over the next century might result in a similar temperature change, but over in a timescale over 100 years. When this climate perturbation is starting to be likely to occur at a rate exceeding the capacity of a plant species to adapt resulting in a total rearrangement of species and communities, as this change is resulting in transient carbon loss but can be recovered over time. In the Northern Hemisphere may lead to a warming to a forest dieback at the southern boundaries of presently forested regions. In certain cases of spring and fall temperatures have been increasing may extend the growing season of temperate and boreal ecosystems, in such cases, invasive species could spread in these regions. As for the tropics, warming increased aridity may lead to a size reduction of the tropical forests. Soil carbon is by far the largest carbon pool in the terrestrial ecosystems (Field, Raupach, 2004). The climate drivers include temperature effects on carbon and other greenhouse gases mainly CH4 fluxes including changes in hydrology can have pronounced effects on both carbon and greenhouse gas fluxes as for the temperature increases stimulate both CO2 and methane emissions have changes in the water table while the contrasting effects on those two fluxes. The global warming potential of methane is about 20 times larger than that of CO2; otherwise a change in the ratio of methane CO2 respiration will have a climate impact. Current climate models have tended to show the warming of the surface ocean, together with a decrease in high latitude salinity as a result of increased precipitation. Will lead to a reduction in the surface ocean density relative to that of the underlying waters, thereby increasing vertical stratification and what will this mean that the atmosphere climate will dramatically change in effects of severe storms, multiple tornadoes, and hurricanes forming over land, ice storms, and other natural disaster weathers that hasn?t been experienced. The effect is to change global warming is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, for instance, as the uses of fossil-fuel to run our cars which releases as more carbon into the atmosphere. In reducing this chance is very impossible, we cannot get off the use of automobiles in releasing more carbon into the atmosphere (Field, Raupach, 2004). Bibliography Brookman, D.Y. (2007). These are languages: 1.English 2.Mandarin 3. French 4.Spanish
Resolved Question: Losing my mind!?
30 May 2008 at 10:08pm
I'm a native speaker of English, and I'm thirteen years old. I've written many works in English, including a good three dozen poems and at least thirty thousand words worth of short stories. I've been told on multiple occasions that my prowess and mastery of the English language is something surreal for someone my age, and I was working recently on actually trying to write something that I was hoping would get published. Here's my problem. It's not really forgetting, per se. I don't really know how to define it. Basically, whenever I try to say/write something, I tend to overthink it dramatically. A simple word such as "house" becomes a day's worth of headaches and drama. I try to overanalyze it for no apparent reason. What can I do to stop overanalyzing things so I can live my life and write in peace, again? I miss writing, but this "condition" is making it near impossible. Thank you so much in advance. Just a note to the person that answered first; my lifestyle's hardly changed. I do all of those things on a regular basis and it's just this that's driving me insane. Seriously, I'm not a geek/nerd who hauls himself up in his room all day writing/reading/whatnot. But you're right, I probably should take a break ^_^"

Resolved Question: I was thinking of becoming a Linguist. Help please.?
25 May 2008 at 3:57pm
Well when i go to collage i will have to learn multiple languages (yay) that will open up the world to me. BUT do i learn all of these languages in college or how does it work? i plan to take spanish 1 and 2 in highschool and then finish my studies in spanish thru online programs and such and be fluent in it before college. all the other languages? do i take courses in them and learn to read/write/speak them. then learn their history or exaclty how will it work? thanks. also, what are some job opportunities for a Linguist?
Resolved Question: Why is there no speaking on Nintendos?
23 May 2008 at 9:32pm
I dont like the fact that you have to read many speach bubbles on the Nintendo DS, why does it not use actual speach, if its because multiple languages would use too much space on the game, I think thats a bit of a cop out.

Resolved Question: Programmers: selection and addition?
19 May 2008 at 2:41pm
Need a program for Web page that would allow user to select multiple choices (each having its own value) and choices would come out of different sub groups. Total value cannot exceed set limit. So, you have a choice of three (each having a unique value) in the first group (pick one) then a choice of nine (each having a unique value) in the second group (you pick two) The total value of your three choices cannot be higher than a set value. Then would like this info forwarded on to my computer. I know html but what language should I use to accomplish this? java? java script? VB? Can I set up the whole thing up in Access for users? But need Internet input. Thanks

Resolved Question: Multiple language subtitles at the same time?
16 May 2008 at 6:27am
I am dating someone who speaks a different language than me (natively. obviously we can communicate). When we are trying to watch a movie in a foreign language, we often can't because one or the other of us can't understand the other person's language well enough to follow the movies. Is there some kind of way to have more than one subtitle at the same time on a DVD? Say we want to watch a French film- can we have English and Japanese subtitles simultaneously? Also, is there somewhere in the United States to get Japanese subtitled films?

Resolved Question: What did you think of today's AP English Language exam?
14 May 2008 at 8:34pm
I thought that the multiple choice was extremely straightforward, with the exception of a couple questions on the first passage -- I actually finished like 20 minutes early and then took a little nap haha. And I felt like the essay prompts were fairly easy, if not a little weird, as well -- I mean, what was up with the first and the third essays? Not to jinx myself, but I think I did really well -- English is definitely my strongest (and favorite :)) subject, after all! What were your impressions?
Resolved Question: Should I study for the english AP tonight?
13 May 2008 at 6:23pm
I'm taking AP English Language and Composition tomorrow, and my class has been "preparing" for it all year, meaning doing practice exams....but I never do incredibly on the multiple choice, which i attribute to not knowing all of the terms for tone or random other words...but we havent worked on that at all this year. And the AP is tomorrow. Should I be cramming terms in tonight, or will i forget it all at the test anyway?

Resolved Question: Japanese Language (multiple Questions)?
12 May 2008 at 6:11pm
Is there a website that can teach me how to speak japanese without having to download or pay something if I sign up? Are there any books that would help me that I could get at like, Borders or Barnes and Noble? Why are there different meanings to the same word in japanese? doesn't that make learning japanese more difficult? I'm 14, and rellay want to learn it so thanks for answering :) Okay, so I probably should've mentioned I'm going alone, no tutors or teachers. And I understand that the English language has different meanings for the same word. However, those words have different spellings, not like in japanese where nan, nanra, donna, nani, ikan, nanto, nanigoto all mean What. So what's the deal with that? That's what I'm trying to get at when asking that. I don't think I'm being very clear, and that's a bad thing. So why are there so many different ways to certain words?
Resolved Question: Translation Help - Spanish?
12 May 2008 at 4:36pm
I could really use some help translating something into Spanish for a web site I have. I decided to have multiple languages instead of just English. I hope to fine someone local, say a college student, to assist me in the future, but for now I would like to have a few words on a welcome page... ...stating this: "Welcome. Here you will find a collection of both my artistic works and intellectual thoughts and philosophies. I will also include a collection of links to web sites I find informative and entertaining. I thank you for taking time out of your life to spend a little time in mine!" - If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it! Thank You, Eric I have posted this in Answers because every 'translator' I have tried in the past and then had read by a native speaker of the language I translated into found the translation to be in error. So I hope to get an answer from a native speaker of the language - in this case Spanish. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Why do many Christians seem to think that Wiccans or other...
8 May 2008 at 10:11pm
Most of the Wiccans and other Pagans on this forum are people who come from a Christian background. Many of us struggled against the call of our current religion in an effort to remain Christian. We are familiar with Christian teaching and have read the Bible. Some of us have read multiple translations of the Bible or have actually read it in multiple languages. Then, why do many Christians think that if we were "exposed" to Christianity that we would somehow become Christian? Especially seeing that many of us left Christianity and its teachings for the teachings of our current religions. We studied our religions before we chose to follow them as well as studying Christianity. Our religions were simply the right ones FOR US! Pleased to meet you Art.....
Resolved Question: I can't decide between two guys...a little help please?
8 May 2008 at 2:12pm
I currently have two boyfriends both great guys even though I'm only in love with one of them I find it hard to choose between them. The one I'm in love with is a high school sweetheart we've been through a lot and it kind of to the point I have to decide if I want more. The other guy is gorgeous and the type of guy that looks good on paper I mean intellectual, speaks multiple languages, world traveler and a genuine nice guy. I'm not sure if I should stick with the hometown boy and explore my new options, the other could turn into a lot more. Because they both think they are the only one I'm seeing so I feel I have to choose.

7 May 2008 at 2:12pm
In another words without having work experience in the working class environment, visa vis corporate world, can someone truely implement the power of influence and have someone do things without actually telling them what to do? I'd find it hard to believe that universities today is any different from yester-years. But please correct me if I'm assuming incorrectly. Its kind of like the cliche from Godfather movie... "I'm gonna give you an offer you can't refuse." This phrase can mean different things to people of different level of experience. How can this be, you may ask? If you have to ask then you don't know what experience that is being talked about here. People sometimes say that they can read other people's reaction, emotions, body language, and so on. There are multiple layers of communication that we humans implement beyond just spoken linguistics.

Resolved Question: Bahasa Indonesia?
6 May 2008 at 12:42am
Hi. I studied Indonesian throughout high school, and I was scoring straight As for four years. After high school I dropped it, and only recently I picked it back up. I haven't studied it for four years, and the more I read Indonesian the more that comes back to me. In about six months, I am planning on traveling to Indonesia where I will live for about 6-8 months. I will also be attending a language school there. Currently, I have multiple grammar books, and the Rosetta Stone language program. Learning Indonesian, for me, has proven to be extremely easy thus far, as I pick it up very quickly. What would be the best course of action to master the language? Will immersion be useful? Should I study via grammar books and multimedia while waiting to go there? Cheers
Resolved Question: Can you loop a DLookup function in Microsoft Access 2003?
5 May 2008 at 1:55pm
Explanation: I have a table [Participants] that has participants' contact info and their Native Language. I have a related table with the participants secondary languages. They are related by the participants ID #. I want to put a control on the participants info data entry form that will lookup and disply the participants' secondary languages. Right now, I just have the secondary languages on the main form as a subform, but after user input, I want to remove the subform and use a linked form instead (since not many participants actually speak multiple languages). But I still want the main form to display the langauges, so they can be seen at first glance. I can display a langauge for the participant using the DLookup function, but it only display s the first language that is attached to that ParticipantID - it won't display all applicable results. How can I get it to list all languages listed for that Participant ID?
