  57. Resolved Question: What's my Chinese name in Japanese?
  58. 7 Jun 2008 at 12:16pm
My chinese name is ??? (dai xinyi). I know that Japanese have their name written in kanji so I was wondering what is my name in Japanese. I used an online dictionary for the meaning of the words http://ryouko.imsb.nrc.ca/cgi-bin/wwwjdic?1B But I couldn't read them. Would a Chinese name sound alike to a Japanese name after translation? Or would it make some sense in Japanese but read differently? However, I'm not sure if the definition they give is for the Chinese or Japanese characters given. For example direct translation is not that accurate as in Japanese, like Tokyo for example. In Chinese, it's like Dong Jing and doesn't sound like Tokyo at all. So there may be hidden meanings in the words or another pronunciation. Thanks

  65. Resolved Question: If ancient man wrote the Bible then how do we know it's true?
  66. 7 Jun 2008 at 9:58am
I'll spend 5 points and ask this question. It just seems to me that the Dead Sea Scrolls were written by man in their interpretation of Jesus's words... then the Catholic scholars took those interpretations and re-interpreted it into the language of their time (Roman? Italian?) and then those words were again translated into other languages with the interpretations of those who read the originally interpreted prose. This being said, how do we know that, like the whisper in the ear game, that things did not get lost in the translation from beginning (Jesus's mouth) to the end (The Bible in my bookcase)? Rob y p What is it that I am doubting? That some guy said "I said so, so believe me" or that my mom said not to go out in the street to play because I would get hit by a car. How can someone so blindly believe that which cannot be proven. I mean really, 4 men wrote the cronologies of Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) and none of them said it the same. If it was truth, would it not all be about the same stuff... I mean even "The Lord's Prayer" is different between Matthew and Luke. Doubt is not the question. It is reality. Who wrote the Bible? MAN... So, is it truth or is it someone trying to control that which was out of control at the time and it just got out of hand? Markapri.... Lots of words. I did not discount that there is a God... I discount that the Bible is all about God's requirements. I contend that since it was written by man it could have conveniently been modified to suit the ideals of the men who were writing it.. If this is so then God would kick them in the butt when they went to the "Pearly Gates". I don't deny nor acknowledge that there is a God in my question, but ask how can we trust something that there is no way of knowing is accurate? Selene: That is my point. You summed it up quite nicely Jed, A fine collection of works I've read lately has proficies: Harry Potter. The first books and each subsequent book finally came to fruition in book 7. A good piece of literature flows from beginning to end. The Bible is a good piece of literature. Oh yeah... who wrote the Old Testament? How did it show up in the same place as the New Testament? Convenient that it just hung around from the very beginning of the "begats" to today. My skepticizm continues to grow with each "faith based" answer, I hate to say.

  75. Resolved Question: Qu'ran Translations?
  76. 7 Jun 2008 at 7:52am
My religion teacher at school told me that reading the English Qu'ran translation in full does not count or merit as me reading the Qu'ran and fulfilling my duty and that the only way I can do so is if I read the original arabic script. The problem is I don't know how to read arabic and English is the easiest way for me to understand which is most important - the understanding of the Qu'ran. Who is right - do I or don't I get the same merit of reading the Qu'ran for reading the translation?

  77. Resolved Question: Would anyone know the name of this children's book?
  78. 7 Jun 2008 at 7:29am
I read this book as a child in the late 1950's or early 60's. It was about two children(a boy and a girl) who somehow were lost or ran away from their families who were part of the large foreign community in Shanghai(China) perhaps in the 1930's. They end up on the plains of Mongolia and have a fantastic adventure meeting bandits, riding shaggy Mongolian ponies across the desert, etcetc. I believe that I borrowed this book from the Union Church Library in Manila on the former Padre Faura Street. It may or may not have been a translation from the German. You are very kind and helpful but that is not the book. Merin and Shari are about children in the time of Ghengis Khan apparently. This is an adventure that takes place,I believe,in the 1930's.

  86. 7 Jun 2008 at 5:13am
They are OK for single words but give them a sentence and they're foxed. If you don't believe me, try this simple test... 1)Write in a simple sentence in English eg "I get fatter every day." 2) Translate it into, say Portuguese (or Welsh, or any language of your choice), take down the answer. 3)Write this answer down and translate it back into English...is what you get back the same as you put in?, is it in correct English?, does it even make sense? What answer did you get from your chosen language? It would be interesting to see.. A native speaker is better every time. Casanov..You old cynic you...but I think you may have a point.

  87. Resolved Question: What books should I read Next?
  88. 7 Jun 2008 at 5:06am
My favorite book is Death on Credit by Celine, the Manheim translation. The last three books i've read are as follows. Sun Also Rises - Hemingway Portnoy's Complaint - Philip Roth. Ward No. 6 - Anton Chekov. All three were excelent, but of those, Chekov was my favorite by a long shot. I wish the man had writen a novel. So, throw some ideas my way. Try to "sell me" on a book that you think I might like. Graci
