  3. Lesson#5 - Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
  4. 18 May 2007 at 3:38pm
Sounds like cognates are the single greatest friend to folks learning Russian. However, as with most good things there are pitfalls. And these pitfalls are called 'false cognates'. A 'false cognate' is a word that shares a similar pronunciation between two languages, but means one thing in one language and something else in the other. You'd sound pretty silly if a Russian asked you what you were doing ('?????????????') and you'd answer '?????????????' (which means 'I am reading a store')....

  9. The Right Way to Teach
  10. 22 Feb 2008 at 4:32am
    Listen
pThis little bit of personal history is inspired by Alice Mercer#8217;s post about a href="http://mizmercer.edublogs.org/2008/02/16/writer-wheres-my-script/"scripted reading instruction/a, which sounds to me like a relatively simple way for school districts to train teaching personnel instead of promoting real a href="http://www.uas.alaska.edu/academics/certs-endorsement/reading.html"professional learning opportunities/a for them. I like Alice#8217;s recommendation: #8220;Be clear in what the program is doing, what you are doing, and what needs to be done.#8221;/p pMostly what I learned from my preservice teacher education was how to follow a teacher#8217;s manual and how to organize student activity. My first teaching job was with second-graders, and teaching reading was fairly simple. I met with reading groups (low, middle, and high) for 30 minutes each day where we read from leveled basal readers while the rest of the class did #8220;seat work#8221; or rotated through #8220;learning centers.#8221; Because each group met with me for about half an hour, I had to let most of the class fend for themselves with independent assignments for about an hour. In the reading group we did phonics and vocabulary drills from a chart, round robin reading from the basal, and fill-in-the-blank workbook #8220;comprehension#8221; exercises. The basals contained abridged versions of chapters from trade books. /p pThat was Reading instruction as we knew it. I trusted the manual to tell me what to do. It was how everyone did it, and most kids learned to read pretty well, though some struggled. We did other things, too, of course. There was journal writing, spelling, reading aloud to the class, and SSR (sustained silent reading). None of it seemed especially scientific, but it appeared to work./p pThe whole language movement caught up with me when our district adopted a new curriculum. I#8217;d been teaching about 5 years. After whole language was officially adopted we tossed out the leveled basals and the workbooks, but we replaced them with non-leveled basals and different workbooks that asked the kids for more constructed responses to writing prompts. We did phonics and vocabulary drills from a chart, partner or round robin reading from the basals, and we used the workbooks. I also did creative writing projects and brought in books from the library on topics related to the basal selections. I had little festivals where I checked out all the books from the library by a particular author, and we#8217;d do reader#8217;s theater presentations and puppet shows. Fun stuff. /p pAs before, most kids learned to read pretty well, though some struggled. The reading difficulty of the basal wasn#8217;t always appropriate to every kid#8217;s need, but neither were the basals we used in the reading groups. The main difference between the old and the new curriculum was that there were fewer workbooks and no reading groups under the new regime. All the kids read and wrote at the same time. I didn#8217;t have to turn them loose for an hour hoping they#8217;d complete a pile of sloppy worksheets that I had to collect and grade after school. And the room was noisier when all the kids were reading out loud at the same time. /p pThe implementation of this new curriculum, though, was not smooth. There was little to no professional development regarding what #8220;Whole Language#8221; really was, and the teacher#8217;s manuals were quite thin. We discussed among ourselves in meetings after school how we were supposed to be teaching reading without fill-in-the-blank workbooks. The district didn#8217;t want us to use phonics workbooks any more, but some teachers hung on to them and used them anyway. People missed their workbooks. The community was in an uproar over the whole thing. There were numerous public meetings. Some people said that the Holt Impressions series a href="http://www.publiceye.org/ifas/fw/9103/textbooks.html"promoted witchcraft/a. It was all very dramatic. It also wasn#8217;t a href="http://www.readingonline.org/critical/houston/weaver.htm"whole language/a, since the idea of using basals is antithetical to a href="http://www.readingonline.org/critical/houston/weave.au"whole language philosophy/a./p pAnyone interested in a basic introduction to theories of reading instruction would do well to read Frank Serafini on a href="http://www.readingonline.org/articles/art_index.asp?HREF=serafini/index.html"Th eoretical Perspectives on Reading/a. It#8217;s a quick and comprehensive look at literary theory applied to reading instruction. Serafini explains 3 main ways in which reading is conceptualized. He sees the current skills emphasis as rooted in modernist notions about meaning, which is believed to reside in the text, and which the reader must be taught to emcorrectly/em identify. The modernist perspective is contrasted with the transactional and the critical perspectives in which meaning is constructed either psychologically, or socially, or both. From a transactional or critical point of view, literature becomes a #8220;way of knowing,#8221; and helps us make connections to the world around us./p pConceptions of teaching are likewise variable and problematic. The idea that there is a single #8220;right#8221; way to teach, just as there is a single correct meaning to any text, creates tension around discussions about public policy since control is a central concern of policy advocates. Scripted teaching programs are all about tightening control, and the problem with them is that not everyone responds similarly to the same approach, and more importantly, not everyone believes that it would even necessarily be a good thing if they did. Returning to Alice#8217;s advice, #8220;Be clear in what the program is doing, what you are doing, and what needs to be done.#8221; /p pOr as Serafini says: /p blockquotepAs literacy educators we should shift the focus from trying to find the right method for teaching children how to read, to determining whether the reading practices and experiences constructed in classrooms are addressing the broad repertoire of practices required in today’s society. Because of this, reading education has to go beyond scientific considerations to include the social, political, and cultural dimensions, if our students are to become the kinds of readers we want in a democratic society./p/blockquote

  11. New School of Language Remix

    Listen
pDavid Brewis is School Of Language. He's also 1/3 of Field Music (one of two Brewis's in the band). Though School Of Language is a solo project, he's not entirely alone on emSea From Shore/em: The Brit's debut includes guest spots from Futureheads' Barry Hyde (guitar/voice on "Disappointment '99," awesome bow-tie in his own "a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/video/new-futureheads-video-beginning-of-the-twis t_007884.html"Twist/a"er) and another Head, David Craig, who sings on "Disappointment" and "Extended Holiday." Ex-Kenickie member Marie Nixon and Sarah McKeown also contribute. Results? The first single, vowel-y "Rockist Part 1," really does sound like a School Of Language. Check it out after the jump, Eliza Doolittle. /ppThere are four of these loopy "Rockist" songs, described as "a series of daydreams on words" in some one-sheet somewhere. So then, in the hope of demonstrating a continuum, after the jump you'll also find the non-album remix of "Rockist Part 3 (Aposiopesis)." Its opening bass line had us thinking "Cannonball," but then it ascending into this full-on clatter-choir. Take a listen. First, though, you need to make it past a scary picture of David./pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=xddqTmD"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=xddqTmD" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=BYSgrJd"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=BYSgrJd" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=W4ZjTTd"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=W4ZjTTd" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=UO5xxLD"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=UO5xxLD" border="0"/img/a /div

  17. Facebook Status Update

    Listen
Last October, a href="http://www.wired.com/techbiz/startups/news/2007/10/facebook_future"Microsoft/a invested $240 million in Facebook, suddenly placing Facebook's value at a lofty $15 billion. Now, we see that revenues for 2007 came to around $150 million, while expenses still leave the company with a negative cash flow that could be as high as $150 million next year. Microsoft's recent move to acquire Yahoo!, which began with a telephone call from Microsoft CEO Steven A. Ballmer to Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang (a call that Ballmer later claimed was "definitely not a courtesy call") prompted us to revisit the Facebook/Microsoft relationship - what it means for Facebook, and a href="http://sramanamitra.com/2008/02/05/deal-radar-2008-facebook-woes-coming/"what Microsoft might have been thinking/a last Fall. As Facebook moves to launch versions in a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109STORY=/www/story/02-07-200 8/0004752106EDATE="Spanish, with more languages coming soon/a, analysts are looking again at the juggernaut, guessing about whether breaking into languages will erode its power as a single network around the world. Meanwhile, widgets and applications continue to proliferate, and Microsoft's role in aiding advertising at Facebook continues to be a work in progress. 19. Tenakh-Talk-10-13-07
  20. 10 Oct 2007 at 1:30am
Noachbr/Genesis 6:9-11:32br/br/G-d instructs Noah -- the only righteous man in a world consumed by violence and corruption -- to build a large wooden teivah (quot;arkquot;), coated within and without with pitch. A great deluge, says G-d, will wipe out all life from the face of the earth; but the ark will float upon the water, sheltering Noah and his family, and two members (male and female) of each animal species.br/br/Rain falls for 40 days and nights, and the waters churn for 150 days more before calming and beginning to recede. The ark settles on Mount Ararat, and from its window Noah dispatches a raven, and then a series of doves, quot;to see if the waters were abated from the face of the earth.quot; When the ground dries completely--exactly one solar year (365 days) after the onset of the Flood--G-d commands Noah to exit the teivah and repopulate the earth.br/br/Noah builds an altar and offers sacrifices to G-d. G-d swears never again to destroy all of mankind because of their deeds, and sets the rainbow as a testimony of His new covenant with man. G-d also commands Noah on the sacredness of life: murder is deemed a capital offense, and while man is permitted to eat the meat of animals, he is forbidden to eat flesh or blood taken from a living animal.br/br/Noah plants a vineyard and becomes drunk on its produce. Two of Noah's sons, Shem and Japeth, are blessed for covering up their father's nakedness, while his third son, Ham, is cursed for taking advantage of his debasement.br/br/The descendents of Noah remain a single people, with a single language and culture, for ten generations. Then they defy their Creator by building a great tower to symbolize their own invincibility; G-d confuses their language so that quot;one does not comprehend the tongue of the other, quot; causing them to abandon their project and disperse across the face of the earth, splitting into seventy nations.br/br/The Parshah of Noach concludes with a chronology of the ten generations from Noah to Abram (later Abraham), and the latter's journey from his birthplace of Ur Casdim to Charan, on the way to the Land of Canaan.

  25. Heid-i Your Ears: Montag Sings, Spencer Pratt Raps

  27. ampersand - podictionary 548
  28. 5 Jul 2007 at 1:01am
Transcript: On my keyboard, above the number seven key there is a little squiggly symbol amp; that means and. Our word of the day is the name of this and symbol. The symbol itself is thousands of years old but the name we use for it is only a couple hundred years old. One of the big differences between our system of writing and something like the hieroglyphics of the pyramids or Japanese or Chinese writing systems is that our Latin letters represent sounds so that when we string them together they form words, while in these other systems each symbol itself represents a whole word. We brag about how this means we can represent our entire language, and lots of others with around 26 letters in the alphabet, while systems that depend on symbolic representations of words need thousands of letters to successfully portray their languages. Yet here we have the ampersand that isnt a letter, its a pictograph, or more accurately a logogram, and its so useful that Europeans have been addicted to it ever since it was invented. It was invented by a guy who worked for a very famous Roman orator named Cicero. Marcus Tullius Tiro was born a slave but proved smart enough that Cicero freed him and hired him to keep track of speeches and things; so he was one of the original stenographers. Perhaps not too surprisingly back then, more than 2000 years ago politicians were sort of the same as politicians today and when they got a winning formula in their speeches, the kept on repeating them again and again. Marcus Tullius Tiro caught on to this and came up with a kind of shorthand by which he sometimes represented entire sentences that he heard repeatedly with a single symbol in his notes. One of the less compressed items of shorthand that he came up with was the ampersand. In Latin the way they said and was et. If you squish the two letters of et into a single character, what do you come up with? The ampersand: amp;. Its a useful shortcut and you can see it all over the place. It was useful in between Tiros time and ours as well and thats how it got its name. Two, three and four hundred years ago this little squiggle was useful enough that children were taught it right there along with their ABCs. At the end of the alphabet, it was usual during this period to have the ampersand as the last letter following the Z. So when kids were reciting their ABCs and they got to the end the didnt stop at w, x, y and z instead they said w, x, y, z and per-se and. This is because for this symbol they were not only naming it, as they did all the other letters, they were assigning it a meaning, which the other letters didnt have. So here it is again: first they named the symbol amp;=and, then they said it meant and all by itself, except instead of saying it means it all by itself, they used a Latin phrase meaning by itself and that Latin phrase is per se. So then after years of saying and per se and the entire phrase got sort of compressed down to a single word: and per se and #8230; ampersand

  29. The Missing Stuff of Thought
  30. 8 Nov 2007 at 8:00am
pimg style="float:left;width:120px;padding-right:4px;padding-top:5px;" src="http://www.sciencebase.com/images/the-stuff-of-thought.jpg" alt="The Stuff of Thought" //p pIt would be so easy to latch on to one particular section in cunning linguist a href="http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/"Steven Pinker#8217;s/a new book, The Stuff of Thought. It#8217;s full of expletives, cussing, and good old swear words. There#8217;s a serious point to Pinker#8217;s use of so many taboo words, and it interesting to say the least to hear him using them in interviews and to watch the unprepared interviewer squirm./p pBut, that#8217;s as maybe. For a blog post aimed at a general audience it would be inappropriate to use some of the more savoury language discussed. Moreover, the post, and potentially the Sciencebase website itself could so easily be tagged as containing adult contact and be filtered out by search engines, proxy servers and nanny software. I could use asterisks to mask off the vowels, but you#8217;d still know what words I was citing and it would look silly. More to the point, while the expletives, their context and usage are fascinating and certainly worthy of close scrutiny, it is the words that Pinker admits do not actually exist that are of most interest./p pSo what words can we discuss that don#8217;t exist? Well, for instance, span style="position:relative;color:white;width:200px;background:#05024F;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-style: dotted;border-color: --;filter:alpha(opacity=25);-moz-opacity:.25;opacity:.25;float:right;padding: 0.2em; margin: 1em;font-family:Verdana,Arial, Helvetica,Georgia;font-size: 24px;line-height:26px; text-align: right;"span style="filter:alpha(opacity=75);-moz-opacity:.75;opacity:.75;"why /spanb /bis brb/bthere brbno /bgender-free brbterm for /ba brbsingle /bmember brbof a /bherd brb/bofspan style="filter:alpha(opacity=90);-moz-opacity:.90;opacity:.90;" cattle/span/spanwhy is there no gender-free term for a single member of a herd of cattle in common usage? It sounds wrong to discuss #8220;a cattle#8221;, but on occasions when you do not know the sex of the bovine in question you cannot differentiate between a cow and bull./p pAnd, what about a politically correct word to use instead of the uncomfortable his or her in a sentence where some people might use the grammatically incorrect #8220;their#8221; as a PC alternative. Similarly, there is apparently no emotion-free word for a heterosexual partnership as there is for married couples (spouse) or gay couples (partner). Pinker himself often feels obliged to qualify mention of his own partner as being a woman to save confusion, but suggests that lover is too romantic while, flatmate is not only too unromantic, but is seriously ambiguous, as is the word partner. I#8217;m sure there are many more examples, but Pinker delves into what these missing words (actually the singular cattle is one of my pet peeves) tell us about language and how we think./p pYou can download a very entertaining interview with Pinker from a href="http://download.guardian.co.uk/sys-audio/Guardian/Science/2007/11/05/ScienceExt ra_StevenPinker.mp3"The Grauniad/a (mp3 format, 33Mb)./p script type="text/javascript" addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencebase.com%2Fscience-blog%2Fthe-stuff-of-thought.html'; addthis_title = 'The+Missing+Stuff+of+Thought'; addthis_pub = ''; /scriptscript type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/addthis_widget.php?v=12" /script div class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/Sciscoop-Science-Forum?a=AKJqnZB"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/Sciscoop-Science-Forum?i=AKJqnZB" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/Sciscoop-Science-Forum?a=5IUWgfb"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/Sciscoop-Science-Forum?i=5IUWgfb" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/Sciscoop-Science-Forum?a=uxtRutb"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/Sciscoop-Science-Forum?i=uxtRutb" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Sciscoop-Science-Forum/~4/181661997" height="1" width="1"/

Thank you Sigur Rós, for making my post-holiday transition back to the internet so super great. This morning word spread that Sigur Rós's new album has a name (emmeð suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust/em), a translation ("with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly"), cheeky (as in ass-y) artwork, a sample track, a free MP3 (IT IS SO GOOD), and a video. A very NSFW video (IT IS ALSO SO GOOD). And there's more: Jonsi's gonna sing in English! On just one track, but still, pinning down the man's emotional conveyances via syllables with actual meaning will be a fairly new experience. There will be one tune in the a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/hopelandishly-devoted-to-you_006773.html"journali st-coined/a Hopelandic language, but the rest will all be in the band's native Icelandic tongue, which makes the title of the first single and free download, "Gobbledigook," ironic in its own Rós-colored way.
